Chapter 1 - The only orange head in the photo

I was the kid you could spot in any class photo in half a second. Bright orange hair, pale skin, freckles everywhere. Teachers learned my name first. Other kids learned the nicknames first.

At home, nobody made a big deal of it. Outside, it felt like everyone had an opinion. Strangers touched my hair at the supermarket. Old ladies told my mom I was "a lucky charm". Kids at school told me I had no soul, a line straight out of a 2005 South Park episode. By ten, I had heard more comments about my appearance than most adults hear in a lifetime.

Chapter 2 - The years I wanted to disappear

As a teenager, all I wanted was to blend in. I begged to dye my hair brown. I avoided the beach because I knew exactly how it would end: burnt shoulders, peeling nose, and someone laughing that I looked like a lobster.

What hurt most wasn't one big moment. It was the constant little ones. "Is it natural?" "Do you have a temper?" "I've never kissed a ginger." Every day, my hair walked into the room before I did.

Later I found out I wasn't imagining it. In a 2014 survey of 1,742 people at University College Cork, 87% of red-haired women said they had been bullied because of their hair.

Chapter 3 - Learning to own it

Then something shifted. The same hair people made fun of started getting compliments, a bit like in Elizabethan England, when Queen Elizabeth I made red hair so fashionable that people dyed theirs to match. Women asked for the name of my colorist. Photographers asked if they could shoot me. I realized the problem was never my hair. It was that I let other people decide what it meant.

Now I wear it loud. I still burn in five minutes, I still get the same ten questions, and yes, I still get called Ariel. But I laugh about it now, and I wanted a place to share all of it: the struggle, the jokes, the science and the stories. That's what Redhead Struggles is.
